Sexism in video games

There has been an ongoing battle about sexism in video games. The long standing stigma is that women don’t really play video games. According to the ESA “Forty-seven percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (30 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent).”  I guess that’s a lot of women playing the Sims right? Wrong. Women are playing games like Gears of War, Halo and Uncharted to name a few. So why is it that in majority of the women in video games look over sexualized? Games like Dead or Alive, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta are some common examples.  According to the Chicago Tribute, only 11.5% of women are in the game development process. I’m talking about the women who get into the meat and potatoes of the games.  This would explain why there aren’t more to games than guns, drugs and women. I’m not going to sit here and say that seeing a naked girl is unimpressive, but have it do something that enhances the game. In God of War, there were naked women running around, but it fit the game. Did Lara Croft really need to have missile silos for breast in order  for the game to be well received?  There are quite a few games out there that are created by women that are awesome and have nothing to do with objectifying anyone. Point in case would be Portal. Its creator was female and I know that I clocked quite a few hours on the two games. Uncharted, Gears of War and Deus Ex were all written by women. So why is it that women are shunned when it comes to games?  Are women’s brains so different that they can only play things like the Sims and Farmville? What is it about games that they don’t get, or is it that men are afraid that the last haven we have can be dominated by women. Who wants to be the guy who get’s pwn3d  (that’s owned in leet speak) by some chick? Can’t really man up when the person in the #1 spot is female can we. So is it that women can’t play or is it that men don’t want to let them play.

Also switching gears, I really HATE when video game companies try to use a super hot girl to get me to buy/play the video game.  Anyone who plays video games knows who’s a player and who eye candy is. If you really want to impress a gamer, find a girl that KNOW’s how to game.  The booth babes are a nice thing to look at, but at the same time it’s a bit disheartening that you have to use sex to sell your game. Is it me, but if I see a hot girl trying to sell a game, I already think that the game sucks.  I need more than just crazy bounce physics on the girls chest, or some ridiculous sexual reference to get me to purchase a video game. You would think that by now people (and by people I’m talking about the producers) would understand this. Does anyone remember Dave Mirra BMX XXX? Nope, also apparently Lollipop Chainsaw is a breakthrough game at 30 weeks on the charts and having just broke half a million sales. I guess in the end you need more than a short skirt and boobs to make a game.  I guess games like Portal 2 (3.46 MILLION SALES) aren’t worth trying to create.  But who am I to complain. I’m just a dumb consumer.

*Side note. Dave Mirra actually sued Acclaim for using his name in the game. You can read more about that here.
